The timeline presents key events in Romare Bearden's life (1911-1988), as well as several important posthumous retrospectives and publications. It allows a more comprehensive view of Bearden's life and work in a visually arresting format. A selection of his numerous solo and group exhibitions is listed here. Titles and dates of his exhibited works are given, if known, following the exhibition title. References to catalogues include brochures, checklists and other printed materials, as well as standard catalogues. Note that “RB” is shorthand for Romare Bearden.
Instructions for using the timeline are given at the bottom. Please note that when the cursor is over the small yellow boxes, additional information will pop up. We are indebted to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, for their permission to adapt “Romare Bearden: A Chronology” from the catalogue The Art of Romare Bearden (2003).
